This is one of the most common questions I have been asked. In fact, it is one of the four most-asked questions parents asked me during my career as a full-time teacher. To answer it here, we will need to look at just what tutoring is, what we can expect from it, and how to decide if it is right for your child.

The Second Most Common Question
Criticism of NAPLAN is perennial, predictable and mostly a beat-up by people who want a “cause” or recognition for leading one. It is NOT a cause of distress to anyone other than to the extent that people with an agenda tell others to be distressed.
NAPLAN fills a gap that has been unconscionably and irresponsibly huge during the decades of school-based and class-based curriculum, a gap that, because all curriculum, assessment and standards were local, meant there could be no objective measure of achievement. Primary teachers would write favourable, inflated reports because telling the truth about a child would incur blame. Parents often did not truly know how their child was faring until late into their schooling. Australia’s education systems must maintain a means of measuring student progress that is objective, uniform, disinterested and detached from the school and staff teaching the child (external).
If NAPLAN can be improved in terms of its validity and applicability, please do so – but please stand firmly against agitators and activists who aim to bring it down. The lack of prescribed curriculum and standard measures of achievement has been instrumental in Australia’s decades-long literacy and numeracy crises.
