Online tutoring works the same way as face-to-face tutoring. It is still individual, but instead of sitting next to each other we use Skype or Zoom and share screens as needed.
No special software is needed. We have had to make so with whatever was mutually available at the time. With one student we used our mobile phones to talk and live Google Docs to write. That way we could still see each other’s work and still talk. We find a way.
It can be a bit difficult at times. Sharing pieces of paper is such a time. For example, I might ask a student to show me their task sheet for an assignment. They will email it to me if possible. Otherwise, they might take a photo of it and send it as a text message. Showing handwritten work is another. Some kids will hold the exercise book up to their camera and move it side to side and up and down. It’s primitive, but it works! We find a way.
